Composite bathtubs – for a velvety soft, elegant look
Bathrooms should be an oasis where you can recover from your hectic everyday life and recharge your batteries. Choosing the right bathtub goes a long way to giving your bathroom that feel-good factor. The way it looks isn't the only important consideration - your bathing experience will also be greatly affected by the material. Velvety, elegant, warm and supple: Composite bathtubs combine all of these properties, providing a luxurious bathing experience. In 2015, Duravit launched our first composite bathtub with the Cape Cod series designed by Philippe Starck and we have been continuing to expand our portfolio ever since.
Because composite bathtubs are so easy to shape, the material allows us to produce striking creations that would be impossible with acrylic or steel enamel. They are made of a high-quality mineral composite with an elegant design and extreme durability. Opting for a freestanding mineral composite bathtub will fill your bathroom with style and modern elegance.
Advantages of composite bathtubs
1. Appearance
Bathtubs made of composite materials have a very sophisticated look and their modern design and timeless elegance are always impressive. With their stylish aesthetics, they can transform the look of any bathroom into a wellness oasis.
2. Comfort
Thanks to its low thermal conductivity, the velvety-soft, matte finish of mineral composite bathtubs is very warm to the touch, in contrast to the way many other bathtub materials feel. The pleasant feel provides maximum comfort.
3. Durable material
The stability of the material means that it can withstand the stress of everyday use and will not go out of shape. This guarantees a long service life. Our high-quality mineral composite bathtubs are highly resistant to acid and alkali alike. Our mineral composite is also completely free of any harmful substances thanks to its composition and it can be combined with a wide range of other materials.
4. Care
Daily maintenance of our composite bathtubs is a breeze thanks to the smooth, non-porous, solid surface. A soft, damp cloth, some warm water with any standard dish soap or vinegar-based cleaner are all you need for hygienic cleaning. In the unfortunate event that a heavy object falls into your composite bathtub and causes minor damage, DuroCast® Plus and UltraResist, the Duravit materials for our mineral composite bathtubs, can even be easily repaired. These repairs will remain invisible if carried out properly.
5. Shape
Bathtubs made of composite materials have a very sophisticated look and their modern design and timeless elegance are always impressive. With their stylish aesthetics, they can transform the look of any bathroom into a wellness oasis.
6. Slip resistance
The surface finish of our composite bathtubs is extremely slip-resistant. Even without an additional anti-slip coating, DuroCast® Plus meets class B slip resistance requirements, ensuring greater safety when bathing.
Comfort tip: For maximum comfort, you can have a whirlpool system installed. A whirlpool bathtub made of mineral composite promises pure relaxation!
Our Duravit composite bathtubs are made from our innovative DuroCast® mineral composite material. Their precise, straight lines are stunning and you'll love the warm, supple feeling of the material against your skin. This type of bathtub can also be designed with surprisingly thin walls, which allows us to make the inside of the tubs extra spacious. Whether you go with a freestanding bathtub made of mineral composite, or a built-in, back-to-wall or corner bathtub – our outstanding Duravit designs will be the centerpiece of any bathroom. In addition, composite bathtubs can also be equipped with special highlights, like an integrated whirlpool system.
Manufacturing process of duravit composite bathtubs
Mineral composite is a modern bathtub material that consists of a mixture of natural minerals, color pigments and synthetic resin as a binder. But not every composite is the same as every other composite. Depending on the material composition and manufacturing method, mineral composite bathtubs can vary widely in terms of the mixing ratios and the type of stone used. For example, the stone could be anything from crushed quartz to volcanic rock.
In order to produce composite bathtubs of the highest quality, all of the production steps have to be under control. That is one reason that Duravit focuses on having our own specialists oversee the production of high-precision molds for the specific design of the composite bathtub in question. Duravit also develops the formulas for the materials in-house. Interactive coordination is the only way to guarantee the high production quality we demand.
1. Step: The composite is poured into the mold
Using a fully automatic process, the minerals, resin and hardener are mixed together under vacuum in the proper mixing ratio and then poured into a mold in the form of a liquid. Mixing under vacuum prevents air bubbles from forming in the mold.
2. Step: Curing the mineral composite bathtub
Mineral composite bathtubs can take up to twelve hours to dry. The process is split up into two drying phases, which are accelerated by applying a little heat. Extra care needs to be taken in this stage because too much heat can cause stress cracks. DuroCast® bathtubs usually consist of two shells: one is the inner wall of the tub and the other is the outer wall. These are joined together using an adhesive and the whole tub is then cured again.
Once the composite bathtub has cured completely, it is time to lift it out of the mold. Holes can then be drilled for the drain, the overflow and the faucet. Then the bathtub and paneling are glued together using a two-component adhesive and the glued areas are carefully sanded by hand to create a completely uniform surface that is free of any visible seams. This process can take several hours.
4. Step: Quality control
Before the composite bathtub can be packed and sent off to the customer, the finish, drilled holes and overall dimensions of each individual bathtub are checked and approved by the person in charge of quality using special lighting at over 1000 lux. Different lighting angles are also used in the process. Once the composite bathtub passes quality control, it is proceeds to the shipping department.
