Blue Space Concept
“The bathroom is currently undergoing a major transformation and, as ‘private spa,’ is becoming a primary consideration for living and furnishing specialists,” said Duravit management board chairman, Franz Kook, on behalf of the inauguration.
Bold design has remained the hallmark of the Duravit brand, and Duravit New York represents an extension of the company’s commitment to provide top-quality product to its valued clientele. As such, Duravit collaborated with Stuttgart-based architects Schmutz & Partner, who conceptualized the 590 square-meter showroom in the form of a “blue space.” This unique and experimental design approach was based on the architect’s goal to create “a flowing, floating space with a weightless atmosphere” rather than a “formal idea.”
With the opening of Duravit New York, Duravit has established one more milestone in the company’s 190-year history of outstanding success, a legacy that started as early as 1817 in the Black Forest of Hornberg, Germany. On one hand, the showroom in New York City serves to encourage new impetus in American markets and on the other, it represents a substantial investment by Duravit to further develop the company’s internationalisation. Said Franz Kook, “New York City is the epicentre of the international architecture and design scene. As a company operating at an international level, establishing our presence here was both a logical step and a move we have wanted to make for a long time.” Duravit now generates over 78% of total turnover abroad with manufacturing taking place at ten production locations around the world.
Design partner
Duravit’s renowned collaborators are another example of the company’s established and growing international presence. Design partners include Philippe Starck, Sieger Design, Michael Graves, Massimo Iosa Ghini, Phoenix Design, James Irvine, Lord Norman Foster and Professor Frank Huster. Additionally, Duravit continues to seek out partnerships with up-and-coming designers, as evidenced by recent collaborations with Eoos, Jochen Scmiddem, Andreas Struppler and Herbert Schultes. Duravit’s design strategy, initiated in 1987, has compelled the company to set a pace of high development over the past 20 years. The development of 40 new projects spread over 80 countries combined with a roster of some 5,500 employees worldwide are figures attesting to Duravit’s outstanding success.
